Sigma Unveils the BF: A Radically Simple, Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera
Sigma has announced the Sigma BF, a new 24-megapixel full-frame L-Mount mirrorless camera that the company says represents an uncompromising new vision for the digital camera. The Sigma BF balances performance with simplicity. It will retail for $1,999 USD and is expected to be available in April 2025.
Key Features:
- Unibody Design: The Sigma BF is the first camera to feature a true unibody, crafted from a single block of aluminum over seven hours. The design aims for a seamless, all-metal body that harmonizes with any attached lens.
- Sensor: The camera utilizes a 35mm full-frame (35.9mm x 23.9mm) Back-Illuminated CMOS sensor. It has a wide dynamic range, with a native ISO sensitivity of 100-102400, expandable to ISO 6.
- User Interface: The Sigma BF has a unique user interface with pressure-sensitive haptic buttons and dial. The main shooting-related settings are stored on the live view screen, with secondary settings in an optional menu, and management functions in the system menu. Users can easily control shutter speed, aperture, ISO sensitivity, EV compensation, and color mode.
- Internal Memory: The BF features 230GB of internal memory, enough to store more than 14,000 JPEG files, 4,300 uncompressed RAW images, or 2.5 hours of video at the highest quality setting. The camera does not have any card slots. A USB-C port is included for charging and data-transfer.
- Color Modes: The Sigma BF includes 13 color modes, ranging from options like Teal and Orange, Powder Blue, and Warm Gold to Rich, and Calm.
- Autofocus: A hybrid autofocus system combines image phase detection and contrast detection. The system can detect people, dogs, and cats.
- Video: The BF supports high-resolution 6K and L-Log recording. It can record 6K at up to 29.97 fps, UHD at up to 29.97 fps, and FHD at up to 119.88 fps. Recording can be done in H.264 or H.265.
- L-Mount Compatibility: The L-Mount lens mount allows the camera to be used with a wide variety of interchangeable lenses from Sigma and other L-Mount Alliance partners. Sigma will be updating its I Series collection of prime lenses with a new silver color option to match the BF.
- Design and Controls: The minimalist design features just four button controls and a dial. The camera has a 3.15-inch 2.1-million-dot touchscreen display.
The Sigma BF aims to provide an intuitive way to use a camera by offering direct access to settings like shutter speed, aperture, ISO, EV compensation, and color mode selection. The camera’s design and functionality may appeal to those who appreciate design minimalism and a unique approach to camera engineering.
